D a n n y L ip f o r d s a y s : To prim e or not to
prim e, th a t is the question, and th e answ er
depends on the surface you’re painting.
Prim er provides a good bond betw een
the surface and th e first coat of paint. In
addition, special stain-blocking prim ers
keep knots, dark colors, paneling, and
perm anent stain s from bleeding through.
You should alw ays prim e bare w ood, new
dryw all, and surfaces coated w ith oil-base
paint th a t you’ll be repainting w ith latex.
Skip prim ing w hen applying a fresh coat of
the sam e ty p e paint, as long as you lightly
sand glossy surfaces w ith fine sandpaper.
If you’re not sure w hat type of paint w as
used before, dam pen a rag w ith denatured
alcohol, and rub it on an inconspicuous
spot. Latex paint will soften and com e off on
the rag; oil-base paint will not.
